What to expect?

Our globalized and strongly interconnected world is dancing various challenges which can be addressed best through international cooperation. It is obvious that problems such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change don’t regard state borders. Successful solutions require joint, multilateral actions, as the Charter of the United Nations states since 1945. Today, even 75 years after World War II, the objectives of the world organization are still valid: Peace, amicable relations between states and cooperation regarding human rights, development, economy and culture are still describing the “realistic utopianism” of the United Nations.

How can the UN pursue these objectives if two of the most powerful states, China and the US, prioritize their national interests instead of joint solutions? What kind of multilateralism and what United Nations do we need in order to de-escalate this multi-layered conflict?

Together with our panelists Dr. Kerstin Leitner, Dr. Hans d’Orville and Dr. Joachim Rücker we would like to address these questions. After an introduction round and a short guided discussion, there will also be time for your questions.

Dr. Kerstin Leitner

Dr. Kerstin Leitner started her United Nations’ career in West Africa and worked at different locations such as Benin, Malawi, China or New York. After a six-year posting as a resident coordinator for UNDP in China she concluded her three-decade long commitment to the United Nations as WHO Assistant Director-General in charge of Sustainable Development and healthy environments in Geneva. Today, Kerstin Leitner is teaching at the University of Potsdam.

Dr. Hans d’Orville

Dr. Hans d’Orville is a German diplomat and his UN-career began in New York. 1975 he became a member of the UN Secretariat, 1982 followed the position as Senior Officer to the UNDP Administration, before he became Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning at UNESCO in 2000. After more than 14 years, Dr. d’Orville is still an advisor for UNESCO and supports various organizations with his expertise, such as the Center for China and Globalization.

Dr. Joachim Rücker

As a German diplomat, Dr. Joachim Rücker held the position of the President of the UN Human Rights Council in 2015. Before, he was inter alia Special Representative of the Secretary - General and Head of the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Pristina. Today, Dr. Rücker is an independent consultant for private and public areas. Furthermore, he published several writings on human rights and migration.
